Cookies and fruit are fine.
I don't think they expect to be served food they are just taking to opportunity for a quick visit.

I'm in awe of the balabustas upthread putting out a spread for guests Friday afternoon on zero notice! I'm not Super Balabusta in a cape like all of you. I'd put out cold drinks and real glasses if I'm feeling fancy, otherwise plastic cups. Op, you're finishing work when your guests arrive, don't be hard on yourself. Who are these people? They might be old friends or relatives in the neighborhood who want to see you. Nice of them to come by. No need to celebrate with food. I know that's the Jewish thing to do but you can celebrate with hugs and make sure they can tell you're thrilled to see them.
