Shouldnt parents be allowed to name their kids whatever they want? With no pressure from their parents or the community? |
I grew up in a Chassidish community where it's expected and accepted to name after grandparents, sometimes great aunts/uncles. It's not a written rule, it's just what's done. This most likely comes from war aftermath, when everyone wanted to name after members of their family who died in the war. And I guess it just stayed that way.
Also, in a community where a certain name isn't the typical, why would you want to name your child a certain way when he/she will be the only one at school with that name?

Me too, I actually know quite a few kids named Penina in Williamsburg. And I think a couple of Shoshanas too.

Sadly in my community it would have been considered way, waaay too weird.
But I would have loved to have a little Hentchy. I think in some chasidish circles it's more common.. |
Was the name of a relative of mine and she asked her family not to name anyone after her, she wanted her descendants to have Hebrew names

I pretty sure I’ve only heard it used by Copts or Greek Orthodox |
It’s in the Gemara. The fact that it isn’t used nowadays is my main strike against it…

You're right to make this a consideration.
My parents gave us pretty cool and unusual names.
One sister loves her name, I'm more or less okay with mine, but my other sister adopted a different yet similar name because hers was just so unusual and a little hard to pronounce. All of our names are gorgeous and beautiful in meaning (though I'm not crazy over the sound of some), but if they're unheard of, there is potential for teasing or at least some level of discomfort.
Some kids can handle an unusual name, but an awkward kind of kid will just feel more awkward and different.

Someone I knew was very sick a few months ago and Rav Chaim Kanievsky said to add the name Todros and call them by Todros.
In the end he was niftar a few weeks later, but this was the first time I ever heard of it.

Lots of name that would stick out because they aren’t typical chareidi names.
Also some names are considered sefardi. Think Malachi, Hodaya, and others.
I just don’t want my kid to get bullied or not get into school because they have different names.

בת אור Bat-Ohr. Would be totally accepted by my Israeli community but my non Hebrew speaking American family would be like:
Battery?
Bat her?
Cookie batter?
Bought her?
Bother?
What?

I'm Chana, named after a Hentcha. Not sure about Polish though, she was Hungarian.

I love the -el names.
Ariella
Gavriel
Eliana
I'm past having kids, but I really wish I could name after my grandfathers. I miss them! They don't have fancy names, but I would have loved to have little versions of them running around.

Chulda. Love her in Tanakh, but I really don't like the way the name sounds.

Hi I'm another RaCHEL. I also don't like Rochel.
I was always called RaCHEL by teachers and friends.
People who don't know me well might call me Rochel. Or older ladies whom I wouldn't correct, like an a bubby-type colleague.
