I am trying to figure how the application for SSI child disability benefits works.
Is there an agency that can help me with the process?
If you have any experience and can help me out, please PM me.
Thanks.

Also, if you receive EI services or opwdd services, officially the care/case manager should help you with that. Though ours totally dropped the ball on us and it wasn’t until about 2 years in the hospital SW helped us (which was mostly her telling me about it and sending me a stack of papers that I needed to fill out and submit- they contact the doctors or school district for more info).

I called DDSO/OPWDD directly to set up an eval. It takes some time. Once all the documentation was is, I applied for disability SSI. Be aware that in order to receive child SSI you can hardly have any assets at all. We were on the border of qualifying at the time but opted not to pursue it further because we were hoping to eventually be able to build our savings beyond the tiny amount we would’ve been able to have if receiving SSI. Also, they do periodic bank checks and if you’re over the limit you could end up having to paying back the SSI. In our case, if they ever did a bank check before we paid our mortgage and utility bills, we’d officially be over the limit. It’s extremely tedious. Oh, and if you get a tax refund, you’d have to spend it all within a couple months in order to keep assets down. Totally not worth it. Maybe things are different in the past couple years, but this was our experience.

I did the SSI all by myself. Applied online, got an appt, brought a boat load of paperwork with me , and dealt with it myself.

As per UJO
- Can only have $2K in the bank at all times
- tax refunds need to be removed from the bank that month
- only one car is allowed, an additional car is considered an asset
- Can live in the home you own
If any of these are not accurate at any time, SSI will be owed for monies paid for that month.

Just putting the out here in case someone needs this info in the future.

-Also something about life insurance policy if it's locked or not- If someone can clarify.

-tax refund does not need to be removed immediately. But should be removed before the year is up. Same for stimulis etc.
-you cannot own a life insurance policy of value. sell it. term I'm not sure.
-max amount is currently 794 ssi + 23 ssa totaling 817 or so.
-note, if you get approved they will give you backpayments from the the day you applied. Since its usually a lump sum owned, you need to create a special account for it. They will release 2000 at once every 6 months. Its a pain to get that back payment with very rigid rules.

If you need to save up a large amount of money, PayPal is held offshore, and can't be touched.

There's also cryptocurrencies.

I'm in the process of applying for SSI for my son, but will stop right here if someone can confirm that the above information regarding assets is true. Can I only have 2,000 in my account at any given time? Thanks.

short answer is yes. Long answer is it depends where the money came from. If its say from your tax return, you have upto a certain timeframe to withdraw the money.
