I work in a school part time and get paid by the hour. They are having mandatory meetings soon and I have to attend. Not at a time I would normally be there. Do I charge for the time?

You should. Unless it's written in the contract otherwise.

I don’t know, but you shouldn’t. These are work, meetings right? Of course you have to charge. If you didn’t and somehow it was found out, it would be a legal risk for them. I know that’s unlikely, but still, don’t put them in that position and don’t shortchange yourself. This is a business arrangement.

If you do special ed, you don't get paid for meetings even though you usually get paid by the hour. Can't answer why.... but why not ask?

I usually ask.
Some schools will pay, others won't.

Definitely if you are at work you get paid - don't feel guilty you are giving your time for your job that is what you are getting paid for. If the school didn't want to pay you they wouldn't have you come Everyone's time is valuable why should yours be any less valuable.

I think it’s like state mandated. I don’t think the school would have had me come otherwise.

If you get paid hourly and the school is making it mandatory for you to come then you get paid this is a part of life. If you feel guilty you can ask the school if they are going to pay you and if they say no then say you aren't going as it's your time and your time is valuable.

You can ask but expect a no on the payment. Part of the job of a teacher does include meetings here or there. And unfortunately Jewish schools don't have clear contracts.
The only time it's fair to demand payment is if you are giving up another paid job to make the meeting.

Yes you should get paid. But I understand your concern about feeling guilty. Maybe just have a conversation with them to confirm.

Ask them what they will be paying
I'm a teacher. Certain things are part of regular salary, like orientation, PTA meetings, etc.
But I do get paid per hour fire extra meetings like curriculum meetings that we have abt6-8 tunes a year.

Because many principals/schools like to guilt their staff into feeling that since this is avodas hakodesh they should be dedicating all their time and life to their job.
BH I don't work in that type of school, but other ppl I know who work in schools have heads that are ALL into that. "How dare you take off (even regular PTO d ays)-- the kids will suffer!!!! ")
So could be you work in a school like that where the administration gives 120% to the school and expects that from everyone else.
I'm devoted, but not THAT devoted.

That may be true for some, but not all.
