This is a spinoff from the thread in 'Preschoolers' asking for words in yiddish beginning with vav for Show and Tell.
In the schools where they speak/teach in yiddish. Do the kids learn the alef-beis in order to read yiddish? Do they also learn to read Hebrew (lashon hakodesh) at the same time, seeing as it's the same letters. Or are the two langauges taught separately, even though it's the same letters.
I never really thought about it before, just asking out of curiosity.

They learn the Aleph Bais in Kindergarten and they learn reading Hebrew and yiddish in First grade.
Some schools teach reading Hebrew in Pre-1-A.
Most chedarim do not teach how to read yiddish without nekudos.
The boys pick it up on their own.

I never thought about this but I find it really interesting. Boys are taught Hebrew letters and needs and are expected to pick up on yiddish reading on their own. In fact, somehow they do generally.
However, girls are taught Hebrew letters and nekudos and yiddish reading separately. I wonder why

Ironically, most boys are much better at yiddish reading than girls.
