What type of wood are your stairs made of? The stair guy said we can do oak for everything or only steps and poplar for stringers and risers. What are the pros and cons of different types of material. What's the strongest wood or strongest at the best price?

I think it really depends what you're planning to do with the steps. If you're planning to stain them, oak is the way to go. If you're carpeting, then pine is I think standard for steps but maybe for spindles or banister poplar if you're going to be painting it.

I have oak treads with pine risers. Treads are stained and risers are painted white. Oak is a lot more money but if I was doing it again, I'd do full oak. I happen to love the look of white risers, it's really sharp. But it's a huge pain to keep clean.

We just ripped off really ugly carpeting and the contractor told us that our steps our pine and we can either recarpet them or do the wood over again and he would suggest oak wood.

Two for oak, that's what we're thinking of doing but when I searched online, I found out there are stronger woods than that.
