I have 48" beds and would like to upgrade to 54". Do I need to buy a whole new bed frame, or can I just replace it with 54" mattresses?

You need a new frame, which you buy with the mattress and isn't that expensive. You may not need a new headboard.

Once you are upgrading-if you have room go for 60 inch. You can get inexpensive bed/box spring with legs from Costco for under $200. They look great and hold up good

Thanks for the help.
I wish I had room for 60". As it is we will really be squishing in the 54".
