What does it mean? I took it literally, just like posters who reply "hugs", but I'm getting the impression that it's something different.

It either means hugs or dislike. It shouldn’t be used for dislike but unfortunately that’s what happens here. It’s usually easy to figure out whether it was meant as a genuine hug or not. (I gave you a genuine hug)

Whaaaat? It can mean something else? Oops.
I always use it to send a virtual hug.

Unfortunately, it has became a passive aggressive method of disagreement and criticism. There is no need to perpetuate this model.

Used properly it can mean a lot to a poster who is having a hard time.

That’s what it was meant for. But people abuse it.

If in your post you revealed something painful/personal etc, assume people are genuinely hugging you. If you post held something that some people might see as controversial, whether it's 'I only bathe my kids once a month as I think that's healthiest for their skin' or 'I think you were right about your mil', then assume it may be someone being passive aggressive.

It’s sometimes oh my goodness I feel so bad for you that you have such a warped opinion, I will give you a hug out of pity.

If a hug would be an appropriate reaction IRL, it's genuine. If hugging someone in response to the statement in the post IRL would be creepy and weird, it's passive aggressive.

Passive-aggressive. Or bless your heart.

(You poor misguided fool. Not you, the huggee.)
