Baby Stabbed In Stroller In Washington Hts
Sep 8, 2005 12:14 pm US/Eastern

A nanny scooped a bleeding baby out of her stroller and screamed for help after a knife-wielding man plunged a knife into the child's chest, police said.

The 10-month-old girl was rushed to nearby New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia, where she underwent surgery Wednesday night and was listed in critical but stable condition, police spokesman Detective Brian Sessa said. At the family's request, the hospital on Thursday declined to provide further details.

The baby, Isabelle Avins, and her nanny were out at around 5 p.m. when the man approached them at 171st Street and Fort Washington Avenue in the Washington Heights section _ a short distance from the child's home, Sessa said.

``He just came out of nowhere,'' said Hennessy Arias, who witnessed the Wednesday afternoon stabbing. ``The baby was hysterical, crying. ... She was crying and trying to gag for air.''

The nanny, identified only as a 20-year-old woman, screamed for help and cradled the baby.

``I can honestly tell you she tried to stop him,'' Arias told the New York Post in Thursday's editions. ``She was crazy, you know, like it was her own kid.''

Isabelle's father, Jon Avins, also praised the nanny.

``The babysitter saved her life,'' he told reporters outside the family's West 170th Street apartment building. ``She's like a member of our family.''

Bernard Derr, 48, a man with a history of psychiatric problems, was taken into custody a short time after the attack and held on attempted murder and other charges, police said.

I don't know if you were being literal or not, but from what I read, the man had a long history of serious mental illness. No, these people should not be walking the streets, but the reality is that since gov't cuts in the Reagan era, many of these people wound up homeless and on the streets. Residential facilities for those who are not wealthy are few and far between.
