Veteran pj'ers can you weigh in on this month's book choices? My son is 11.

Not crazy over any of the selections. I think I will choose the last two but no idea if any are appropriate.

The $150,000 Rugelach and

In PJourway you can select “parent guide” and preview the books.

I wonder why this thread didn't come up in search. I had to go to my "following" list and it's lucky someone else bumped it recently so it didn't take long to find.

I'm thinking Rugelach looks like it might be fun, and I'm going to pre-read Upstaged before giving it to my kids because the synopsis mentions a boy crush and I like to know just how much is going on before giving those to my kids. Chelm is definitely not my speed and the other one is very soccer-heavy which I don't think my kids would be interested in.

It's funny this thread came up. I just cancelled PJ library because of all the nonsense books we got. What irked me most about the picture books was the lack of kippas though. Sometimes they had families from diverse racial backgrounds (yay!). What a missed opportunity it was not to add a kippa, a universally Jewish symbol.
Anyway, I've actually liked a few kar Ben books we got.

I checked them out, and all 4 books seem appropriate.

When I read through the parent reviews, I think it's called renegade reporter mentions that the girl has 2 fathers.. one she calls Abba ....

Good catch. I just went back to reread the parent guide and it says Ash's Dads fast on y"k.

Yes! I believe if you choose another book, it asks if you want to change your mind.. try it!

Ok great! BH! I reread that line a couple of times, they are really trying to sneak things in.
Just showed me that I have to keep reading before I give to the kids...

I ordered the Natan Sharansky book for one of my kids and I can choose another one for my other kid but I'm not sure I will. I don't need the two dads book. I read the sample pages of 37 Days at Sea and I don't think my kids will be interested in the free verse style and I also don't think we need another holocaust book. I am considering the doughnut book but from the sample pages it seems like I should read through the whole thing first just in case, and it also seems like the kind of thing I won't have patience for.

has anyone checked out the books this month?

the one about yael and the party says about her torah reading for her bat mitzvah. im not thrilled about it.

when lightnin' struck seems a bit traumatizing. there's illness, death, bullying, beatings.

the other 2 seem neutral.

We’ve gotten it from a local library that’s pretty strict with what they stock so I’d assume it’s safe but I didn’t look through it before I let my kids read it. My age 10+ kids say it’s good but a bit juvenile.

For this month:

Out of Egypt. Its from Shazaq. Which is Chabad based.

The rare book from an orthodox source.

Also: even when books are “ok” (rarely, IMO), they are SO dumb!

Why?!

Nothing with actual literary content. Just plain dumb.

Aside from a rare occasion.

you're all correct. out of egypt is from shazaq and is a perfectly "kosher" book. definitely one of my picks for this month.
