Gentleladies, and also, Gentle, Ladies!

One of the ways to prepare for Shabbos is to "make the beds"
What does this mean?

Not, bring in the hay!
Not, go to Ikea and get out your wrench!

When I was a kallah I remember asking, regarding the prohibition of making your husband's bed, that what I do each morning (straighten sheets and blankets, duvet, pillows, etc.) is NOT "making the bed".

Preparing the beds? (get your kids to take junk off so they can lay down????)
Do what I do in the morning?
Fresh linens?
Something else?

I would love to 1) see a source for what "making the bed" means, but also, 2) hear what people really do! (Not because I or anyone else is doing something "wrong", but because I am looking for LITTLE extra ways to prepare for, anticipate, and enhance Shabbos. Thank you!

Good Shabbos, all your Holy Women making Shabbos today!

I always understood it as putting fresh linen on the beds. Not sure if there's any source for it though

I never learned this. Perhaps you shouldn't change linen or make the bed in front of him but making the bed is a chore that needs to be done at some point.

I learned that 'making the bed' is turning it down at night before going to sleep, regarding nidda.
About shabbos I have no idea.

My mama, that's what I learned, too.

Keep the answers coming!

Thanks!

Ki hidlakti neirosai vehitzati mitasi vehechelafti simlosai lichvod hashabbos

It's from the tefillah friday night before kiddush

Artscroll translates as "spread my bed"

Although for niddah, a sefer I have says

Assur lehatzia (same lashon) mitaso lefanav.
But then it continues
Vedavka prisas hasadin haelyon, aval hatzaas hakarim...shehu torach, muttar...

I change the linens. Clearly not just straightening up the bed because that’s a daily task. Besides which, it would make zero sense to change the linens on Sunday or Wednesday and not have the fresh ones on Shabbat. I can’t speak for Halacha, but I can speak for common sense.

I agree, Zaq! Nothing like fresh sheets!

Any other sources, ideas, related root words, special touches!?

In the same vein, I change our towels, both kitchen and bathroom. I’m shocked that my children don’t. While I never told them this is lich’vod Shabbat, you’d think it would be obvious.

I also water the plants on Thursday night or Friday morning so that they won’t wilt on Shabbat. They wouldn’t, but just in case, I don’t want to be tempted

My gold jewelry is for Shabbat. The silver is for weekdays. This was not a deliberate plan, just a natural outgrowth of “we keep the best for Shabbat.”

Certain foods are just vocherdik. Pasta, soups made of beans or grains, are weekday food. Which doesn’t mean I won’t enjoy mushroom barley soup or pasta salad at your house on Shabbat , but my Shabbat soup is chicken soup and noodles show up only in lokshen kugel.

I learned in a Shiur that this actually isn’t to be taken literally, it means to have relations with your spouse

I'm guessing this was written long ago, and it probably means to change the straw or something.
I'm sure someone else here knows more than me about how beds were made long ago, and if it was a weekly task.

We make sure the bed is clear of laundry and other stuff that may have need tossed there as well as normal made.
