Apparently in certain circles, mothers feel a lot of peer pressure to pierce their babies' ears.
Maybe if a few stop doing it, it will change the trend.
Plenty of babies ears get infected from the earrings, that's not exclusive to older kids. And often even more with babies, as they don't understand to not touch it.
In my circles it is not so common to pierce a baby's ears. One sister in law had a bunch of boys first and then a girl and was so excited to give her earrings to make her look girly. (Again, this is totally for the mother. Babies are super cute without). Well, the holes got infected, the poor baby was miserable, they had to let the hole close up. And then a few months later, the mother tried again to pierce them and it was a repeat, the same thing happened.
