Is anyone here an expert in this, like a lawyer or something? The birth certificate has the first name blank, last name is correct. The social security card has a normal first name (for example, Sarah). The passport and drivers license and all other documents everywhere have a nickname (for example, Suri). The new employer says they need a copy of the social security card, even though past employers have only ever asked for the number. The soc sec card got lost decades ago. We requested a replacement soc sec card but you need to show a drivers license or other documents to get it, and the names don’t match.

We’ve already tried asking the various agencies and got nowhere. What should we do?

No advice on getting a replacement but I’ve never heard of an employer needing a copy of the social security card

Just tell them you don’t have it and that the number will have to be good enough..

ETA: I guess it’s for the W9, which I’ve always just shown my license as ID. Ask if there are other forms of ID that are acceptable

No suggestions other then to try getting to speak to a supervisor at social security

But I do suggest to scan all yours and your children's documents birth certificates, ss,.. and save them to one drive / Google drive

Wait. How'd u get your Driver's ID or passport if the names don't match?

My birth certificate has my first name stamped in back, front says girl (I think) but I imagine you've checked the back by now

It was a whole story to get the passport, I think the soc sec card was already lost at that point and the person was still a minor. So school records, library card, things like that were used, maybe an attestation from a parent? All other documents were then based off the name on the passport.
