Are print and tone on tone fabrics "OUT" for "MODERN" elegant sofas?

All I see in the stores, websites and on all the luxury decorator's Instagram pages, is solids and more solids on living room sofas. (Ive seen tweeds on casual sofas, but not on elegant living room sofas).

N O T H I N G E L S E.

Ive had a dark tone on tone fabric on an elegant living room sofa for many years and it never showed stains.

Even solid dark fabrics will show stains. Any print or tone on tone pattern (like a mans white on white shirt) camouflages stains.

If youre aware of a sofa that comes with options of some kind of pattern or tone on tone, please link to it, or show photo.

Some more modern designers are going back to the dramatic patterned fabrics that many of us young 'uns would associate with Grandma's loving room. That, and smoky mirrors, gilded furniture, layered rugs, heavy drapes...

It's gonna take another couple of years for the general heimish oilem to run with it, though. We are always a few seasons behind in decorating trends.

Either way, if you walk into a furniture shop, you can ask them about sofa fabrics. Most have books of fabric options and you can choose whatever finish you'd like, regardless of how they have it displayed in the showroom. (In Brooklyn, I've had a great experience at TGI Furniture finishing a sofa in a custom patterned fabric.)

I was at a fabric store recently and a women was there with a designer picking out gorgeous deep blue on blue flowered fabrics to make custom furniture. Mixing diff fabrics like flowered, tweed. It looked like it would be dramatic.
Anyone can do that

Well not anyone as it takes a really trained eye to successfully mix patterns. Most amateurs can’t do it and so that is why most homes are decorated with safe choices like beige and gray and no patterns.

You can usually tell when a room is done by a designer because there is a wonderful blend of colors, patterns and textures. Nothing clashes but nothing is matchy matchy 🤫😊

That is very true. An easier way to get that brighter, more colorful, mixed-pattern look is through throw pillows. Pick a bunch, try them out, return those that didn't work.

It's a lot cheaper and easier to return and replace pillows than a whole couch. And you can also switch things up more often because pillows cost a whole lot less than a couch.

My present couch is dead, so I need a new couch or I need to reupholster this one, but reupholstering costs more than buying new.

My big issue with solid fabrics on couches is that a print or texture camouflages stains and damages, whereas a solid fabric you see every tiny pull or damage on the fabric.

That depends on the fabric as there are high performance fabrics thst look luxurious.

A fabric swatch will show ratings for durability and as I recall they use a rub measure if durability which I assume literally abrades the fabric. The higher the rub count, the more durable the fabric. And some fabrics resist grime more than others.

Where in the NY/ NJ or Long Island area can I find a fabric store for sofa upholstery? I'd like to send a sofa in to be reupholstered and they do not have fabrics which I like

If youre in NY, may I ask who is doing the upholstery work?

I did a lot of legwork on the internet when I was decorating as the major fabric companies all have websites and you can get a sense of what is available. Your upholsterer can probably order swatches.

Alternatively you can go to a place like the D&D building in Manhattan where a lot of the top fabric companies are located. I am not sure if you need a designer to enter because often they will let you look. There are designers who hire themselves out for an hourly basis to escort people to look at "to the trade" sources.

Your upholsterer would be able to order any fabric you selected.

It's not a bad idea to use a designer for fabric selection because not only will they have aesthetic advice but they also will be very helpful in terms of the suitability of a fabric for your home and where you want to use it.

I feel the same and I want a white on white or cream on cream or Greige on Greig elegant fabric.

Re-upholstering is as expensive as buying new, but my sofa is much more comfortable than a lot of the current sofas. It's in very good condition and good quality. It's just the fabric and some stuffing which has fallen apart.

Im curious, how are you planning on keeping a light colored sofa clean?

As far as upholstering an old couch, many of the places Ive tried come out to be much more expensive than buying new. Is Chaim thought of as a reasonable place? Do you his ballpark figure for reupholstering a 90" (nice size) sofa?

I have had my high-end gray fabric sofa for 4 years already with 4 rambunctious boys and not 1 stain. Looks exactly the same it did on the first day I received it. I can't remember the brand but I could check later. And like others have said, I bring in color with throw pillows from west elm.

Id love to know the brand, and where it was purchased, being thats its holding up so well.

Are you saying your "4 rambunctious boys" never once got pen, pencil, crayon, or marker on it?

Do you know if the fabric was treated?
