A few years ago, Calligraphy (Mishpacha Yom Tov supplement) printed an amazing story.
The story was about a young new Rav who was trying to exert his influence on his shul. He created a bunch of takanos for weddings which had a lot of naysayers. He had one right handed man (gabbai, maybe?) who stood by him no matter what.
Eventually, when the gabbai made his own wedding, he did NOT follow the takanos and the Rav regretfully was unable to attend.
They all found out later that he had b'davka made a fancy wedding so the Rav wouldn't come and the whole shul could see that the Rav had backbone.

Does anyone remember this story or have a copy of it? I felt it a very powerful message on daas Torah and would love to get my hands on it again.

You can contact mishpacha and ask them if they can send that dirty to you.

I'm pretty sure it was a Dov Haller story, also printed in an anthology of his. I'm going to look if the book is on my shelf now.

I highly recommend this book, along with all of his books as they provide keen insights into our society.

You need to clean up your predictive text LOL

This is such an incredible story. I remember discussing it IRL at the time, and it really stayed with me. I love Dov Haller's work!

I’m not usually a short story person but captive audience is an amazing book. The first story in particular is one of my favorites.
I also love one of his older books a promising past which I don’t think gets as much recognition because he wasn’t as well known back then.
