we moved into an old house and my kitchen tiles are covered in grime, and grout is super dirty. I know how to clean the grout, but how do I get off the top layer of grime from the actual tile? please help!

What type of tiles, are they stone, ceramic, linoleum? You need a scouring cleaner. Post what type of tile.

Ajax powder and some water. Use a broom to brush into grout. Then clean off with
microfiber cloth by hand. I don’t know what it does to the tile finish but does a great job on grime.

If you tap it with a metal spoon, does it clank like stone or is it quiet like a flexible tile? Is it shiny or matte?

Get some Bar Keepers Friend. I like their soft cleanser. It's for tiles (but not for polished stone - read the bottle), ceramic, porcelain and stainless cookware.
Shake well. Squeeze onto wet Scotch Brite pad. Scrub away soiled surfaces. Rinse thoroughly within 1 minute of application. Wipe dry.
