My babysitter just asked for paid vacation. Is this even a thing? She comes daily so that I can work. Even if this were some alternative universe where I could afford to pay for her vacation and another babysitter to cover her, is that something people do? I'm shocked she even asked.

I live in California but 2 weeks paid vacation is standard. Usually 1 week is picked by the family and 1 week by the babysitter. It’s really important to get all these expectations laid out so no one is surprised.

I’ve heard of babysitters asking and being told no.

You need to be wealthy to live in California

I'm a babysitter in Brooklyn and I wish! Just lost a full week of income because kids were sick. But I don't know what's standard in your area...

Re a mother from California, do you pay off the books?

This has been widely discussed in other threads.

It is customary to give your household help the equivalent of at least one week’s pay if not two depending on length of employment.

It really depends on whether yuu want to retain her services or if you think she is completely fungible and easily replaced. 🤷‍♀️

This is standard where I live for full time help. People discuss it when they hire

That is definitely not true, although it always helps to have money wherever you live

We pay in cash. I don’t ask questions about if she reports the income.

I have a few specific holiday where my live in takes off and I pay anyways. x-mas, New Years, and Easter. Any other time she needs off she just tells me in advance she needs a certain day but I don’t pay her for that day. If I travel Oran’s don’t need her then it’s on me, I pay her for the lost work.
I don’t pay for a week vacation.

I don’t think you “need” to be wealthier to live in California than New York. They’re both high cost states. More money makes things easier wherever you are, of course.

We give off paid for YT (so two weeks a year we choose) and she gets to pick 1 week to take off unpaid
