Bottle of half and half was closed in my fridge. Took out today, see date is 1/16, but doesn't specify if it's best by or sell by date.
Would you use?

Usually do that with milk but dunno what half n half is supposed to smell like...
Is any smell an indicator that it's no longer good?

Pour a bit into a cup of black coffee. If it curdles, it's gone.

If in US it's a "sell by" date, not a "use by" date.

Oh, and a "best by" date refers to flavor, color and texture, not food safety. After a "best by" date, food is still safe, but flavor, color and texture may begin to suffer. "Sell by" places a limit on how long a food may be sold but the assumption is that it will spend some after-purchase time in a pantry or fridge before being consumed. "use by" date means food may not be safe to eat after that date, although if storage conditions were ideal, it may in fact still be edible. Whether you choose to eat it depends, among other things, on your tolerance for risk vs. waste and, perhaps, how good a nose you have.
