IyH we're expecting our first and brainstorming names. My grandfather passed away recently and I like the idea of naming after him, but we're struggling to think of a Jewish name we like. We'd rather go with a similar meaning rather than a similar sound, and Robert means "bright fame." Using my grandfather's middle name isn't an option since it's the same as my FIL's name (Joseph). Any ideas? We're modern Yeshivish

Flame is Shalhevet or Lahava, which are both girls names, but all of the above boys names get the point across.

I wouldn't name Shimshon (because it's not used in my circles), but it comes from the root for "sun" which is certainly a flame

Most Roberts I've heard of are Reuvens.

And Meir is a light.

So why not combine for Reuven Meir? Nice combo and flow.

And you can choose which one (or both) to use.

Whatever you decide...bshaah tova!

Another vote for Reuven. You can nickname him Ruvi

I personally would do a flame kind of name as mentioned earlier. If he wasn't named revuen than it wouldnt feel like naming after him to me.

Did your grandfather not have perhaps a Jewish name for Robert, but was called by his English name?
Is it possible for you to find out which Jewish name in place of Robert he was given on the 8th day?

May the birth of your baby be b'shaa tova, easy, quick, and bring you and yours much joy.

My grandfather wasn't Jewish.

Thank you!

Thanks to everyone for the ideas! I like the idea of possibly naming for the "bright" half of the meaning (I can't really think of a Jewish name that means "fame" and I'm not sure that it totally would line up with my late grandfather's or our values if I could) Thanks!

Oh, it's actually "fame"? I, and probably everyine else assumed it was a typo and you meant "flame". I'll try to think if there's anything Hebrew for "fame".

'Fame' according to hebrew-english online dictionary morfix is תהילה or הלל.

for eg. Hall of Fame - is היכל התהילה

So how about Hillel?

Or Baruch - not same meaning but has the B and R of Robert.
