If you send your kids to a playgroup that isn’t legal, are you filing this year for the dependent care refund? You can get back half of what you spent in 2021
If yes, does the playgroup give you a hard time about it?

They have to be willing to give you SSN and declare the money on their tax return.
Some will. Some won’t. Some declare a maximum.

The IRS will allow you in most cases to get back the credit if you can show that you tried to get the information but they refuse to give it
Do you just accept walking away from thousands of dollars?

I'd sooner pay less monthly, send to a local Morah I trust, with a small group, and lose the child tax credit, than pay more for a commercially run group setting with whichever Morah the place hired, and get some back.
Since legal daycare centers charge more, I'm not losing all that much.

I did that last year for a legal childcare I couldn't reach. They had told me I would be able to file it.
My next playgroup told me I can't, but I needed childcare and was desperate..
