I don't think most parents want their sons collecting in other cities. But the boys feel peer pressure from friends and the yeshiva heads and the parents feel they can't say no, in my observations.
Of course, where I grew up, the main yeshiva did not do this at all, because of a tragic drunk driving car accident that occurred on Purim like 30 years ago. Instead, they have the boys go door to door before the actual day of Purim, in the local community only....

Beis Medrash. Sometimes 12th grade. They are technically men more than boys, but are supported financially by their parents which is why I still hold that the parents should be buying gifts for the hosts.

Why would anyone agree to host kids over Purim, knowing that they are going to drink?
