I don’t drink Smile But I like to cook with wine.

Here in Lviv we have prohibition now, not a bad idea.

What could replace red wine to make a good beef stew?

I like using water and seasoning it very well with garlic and salt and a bay leaf. Also tossing the beef cubes in flour, so that the liquid thickens up into a nice gravy.

Can’t I just use some grape juice and ketchup?

Hmmm....

Oh and for any skeptics there’s plenty of frozen kosher meat in stores, no need to search it out through Chabad or anything.

Yay Israel coming and helping us on the ground here!

Interesting. I use wine in some of my roast beef recipes, but never in beef stew.

I still have my grandma's pressure cooker, and nothing makes a beef stew like it. I just saute onions and beef chunks in a little oil, season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika, add in a couple of potatoes and chunks of carrot, and water like half-way up. I then put on the pressure lid and cook the requisite amount of time. The beef gets really tender and the whole stew is savory and delicious.

I haven't tried it with stew, which presumably calls for larger amounts, but I have substituted for red wine in smaller amounts in other recipes. Usually I do a mix of grape juice and some red wine vinegar so that the dish doesn't come out too sweet and has that more intense wine flavor.
