When I've traveled in the past, liquids always leaked in the bag. Is there a way to prevent it?

Did they leak because of structural damage to the bottle, or because the lid became loose?
I normally pack liquids in individual plastic bags and spread them around the suitcase so they are well cushioned. I don't take much, but don't remember them leaking.

I bought lands end or Eddie Bauer toiletry bags because they were well designed.
That being said, bottles can leak anywhere, including toiletry bags, so I agree with Elfrida; I pack my bottles into small plastic bags to avoid leaks within my toiletry bags.

Ipen the bottle, cover the opening with a sandwich bag then rescrew the top. Also put it in a plastic bag. A toiletry bag just keeps them contained and organized.
