What year was this and where did they live?
Not everyone can do this and many factors come into play.
Also for many yichud can be a factor.
People can do chesed in the way that is comfortable for them even when pushing ourselves beyond our limitations.

Do you mean homeless people in general?

Op you don’t have to bend over backward or be so open minded your brains fall out. You don’t have to be so defensive or pc that you can’t speak plainly and casually.
It’s normal to be wary of strangers. Particularly normal for women.
