when a situation cannot be changed eg war survivors could not bring back their lost ones
may one still daven? I am not talking about asking hashem for help in going through life and for strength, just breaking down and giving out the pain however often you feel it or is it like davening for something that cannot be changed...?
is tefillah just to connect to hashem or can it change your situation?

Of course! Davening is about communicating with your Creator, not placing orders for things to happen. Talking to Hashem about something that can’t be changed b’derech hateva is more than okay. You can always ask for His assistance in helping you reach a point where you’re more emotionally able to deal with the situation, but talking to Him just for the validation of knowing He’s listening and cares is great too. If you’re feeling upset at Him you can discuss that with Him too! Dovid Hamelech did so in many perakim of Tehillim.

Of course.
Shevach bakasha hoda'ah isn't only asking for things. It's speaking everything.
