I think a phobia is an irrational fear, like the claustrophobic poster at the dentist.

as.

That's the definition. Fear of a home invasion when you live in a high-crime area is perfectly rational and not a phobia unless it's carried to such an extreme that it interferes with your functioning. Fear of the color blue or of the number 13 or redheads, otoh...

Dislike and disgust is also not a phobia. Phobias are paralyzing. If you hate roaches but can bring yourself to stomp on one in your combat boots and wipe the soles with a tissue, you don't have a phobia.

Things like being afraid of being shot or homeless or fears of things that might happen are not phobias. Phobias are things that paralyze people in their daily life. I don't know anyone who doesn't have a fear of being shot. Even if you think about it often I don't think it falls under the category of phobia unless you spend all day seeing guns where they don't exist and running for cover.

I won't sit in a park by myself because someone might stab me from behind.

If I sit on a bus I will keep looking over my shoulder to see if someone might be considering killing me.

I constantly monitor the cars near me house to see if anyone is following me. I will hide or run into my house.

These are just some examples. Call it what you want Smile

water on my face - even in the shower

those are irrational.

then there are the more rational ones.
bees/wasps I am dangerously allergic to so pretty sensible to be scared of them
vibrations of any sort but that's cause they trigger migraine for me

I'm very scared of fish and it has nothing to do with getting bitten. I hate the look and texture and smell and their eyes and fins and scales. If I see a picture of one without warning I literally jump and yelp.
