How would I go about becoming a kitchen layout designer?

I believe I have the qualities that would make me successful, but I don't know much more than that.

Do I need schooling/training? If so, where?

How would I get started?

I know someone on here is a kitchen designer. I don't want to pm bc at the moment I was to keep my username anon.

Any advice?

The best experience would prob be to work in a kitchen store. You might need to take a course but likely you can learn on the job. The more experience you have, the better. Which means you likely will not be able to go on your own for a while…

You can learn to use a computer program, e.g. on lynda.com
I would think having that skill would be useful although various companies might use different programs, the basic ideas would be similar.

And then, yes, see if you can get some experience in a place that does design.

That would be me.

The dominant kitchen program is 20-20 although it's not what I use. 20-20 is popular because it is a 3D CAD program that does cabinet pricing. You need to learn a 3D CAD program.

Collect information. Ask questions. Strive to be the best. I am obsessed with ergonomics and good design — this is my passion! You also have to be good at math and unless you just want to sit in the back room drawing plans, you will need to have solid people skills.

Either apprentice yourself as a bottle-washer to an established kitchen designer or get a job at a design place or a big box store.

Although I am self-taught, the certification you will want is from the NKBA: https://nkba.org/
