I never gave reflux meds before even though I had some major spitter uppers. However this new baby (5 weeks old) spits up like I’ve never seen before. Buckets. Plus my milk supply isn’t as good as it has been. I had a lactation consultant and she said it’s reflux. Dr had to be convinced a little but gave me Pepcid. It really seemed to have helped! With his fussiness and spitting up.
However I know the other dr in the practice is very anti reflux meds.
Plus apparently they’re not so safe for baby? What to do. Why are they bad ?

OP HERE. wanted to add- he’s also constipated and I wonder if the reflux meds make it worse?? Pepcid. (Yes I know a breastfed baby can’t be constipated but he only goes every few days and he strains and pushes constantly)

They are not ideal but like many medications you have to weigh the benefits vs the disadvantages. They are not good for gut health but they may be what your baby needs right now. I would probably try other things first

Uncontrolled reflux can cause pain and refusal to eat and weight loss. So if they’re needed then I wouldn’t say they’re unhealthy. My baby has been on them for like a year, I wish he didn’t have to be but otherwise he’ll refuse to eat.

My daughter was on it for 3 months till she outgrew her reflux. Too much spitting up can have a adverse effect on the esophagus.
