I know there are many customs with regard to when to put on tefillin the first time for a Bar Mitzvah boy.
Ours is 30 days before.
However, 30 days is Shabbos.
Should my son put it in Friday morning or Sunday morning?

It’s minhag. Ours (per our rav because we are both BT) is on the bo ba yom itself.

I'd ask a Rav. We actually were told to put on even earlier because there was Yom Tov in between and therefore less days of Tefillin before the actual Bar Mitzvah.

We do two months before and for us it's standard to start a few days earlier if necessary.

DS put on the morning after his bar mitzva. The actual day he was born.
