I'm due on shavuos and was thinking of naming Dovid. Is the name Dov the same name as Dovid?

No.
Dov is a different name, Hebrew for "bear".

Does Dovi still go as a nickname for Dovid or is Dovi really a nickname for Dov?

Dovi is for Dov.
Duddi is for Dovid. I think duvi (spelled with a U) can be for dovid also.

Dovi is usually for dov and duvi for dovid. But if you want to name Dovid and call dovi, why not? It's your choice.

Well it kind of depends on your havara. If you’re litvish- Dovi/y is dove-y (like past tense of dive) and and dove-y (like the bird) for Dovid.
If you’re chassidish- Dovi (pronounced like the bird) is a nickname for Dov, and Duvi is a nickname for Duvid.

Dov can mean a bear or berries.
Derived from דוב or דובדבנים
In Yidish it's Ber or Berren (berries).
(Yada yada I know there's other words for berries in Yidish)
איך רעד אידיש אויך ב''ה און איך ליין די מעלות

I know a dovid who was called dovi is a kid.
Not the way dovi is pronounced for dov (long o)
For dovid it was promoted duvvy (short u)
But always written properly as david/dovid

I know a Dovid who is called Dov or Dovi (slightly softer o then if his name was Dov, but hard to pick up the difference, I’m sure many people assume his name is Dov)
