In israel everyone does it, even families who see themselves as traditional but not frum.

I grew up with this before I was frum and where I live now, every single orthodox shul in the area throws candy for most bar mitzvahs. We just made one actually and the gabbai told us about 75% throw candy for a bar mitzvah.

OP, we had small baggies with a sunkist gem, a laffy taffy, and a zaza. My friend made them for us.

they need to be wrapped. Thats why ppl use sunkist. Soft and wrapped. Here people use wrapped chocolates which are not that soft but no one has been hurt yet.

Please only wrapped marshmallow. I got hurt when someone threw taffy/Sunkist and her aim wasn't good so the back of my head got hurt.

They threw Sunkist at bar mitzvahs when I was growing up, Conservative. The bar or bas mitzvah leined from a podium front and center of the room and then immediately ducked down behind it in an attempt to avoid direct hits. It was always rather amusing.

I think I also participated in this at an RW Orthodox shul but it really felt ridiculous trying to do it from the other side of the mechitza.

zaza or any small wrapped sweets are safe. At our shul (OOT, litvish) everyone does this at a Bar Mitzva.
