Inspired by camp threads, I wonder if anyone has tips how to shop for a boy going to a sleepaway yeshiva? How much of everything should we get if he does his own laundry etc.?

my son in yeshiva gedolah likes to have 20 pairs of socks, underwear so he doesnt need to do laundry often. he has around 6 shirts and pants. (not including shabbos shirts)

I am assuming you mean Mesivta (high school) and not yeshiva k'tana (elementary).
It is not so different than camp - just more dress clothes and less sports clothes
Below is probably the bare basics - you might need to send more:
14 underwear, 14 socks (everyday), 14 undershirts.
2-3 pairs of shabbos socks
5 pairs of dress pants - that don't get washed every wear.
7 - white everyday shirts
2-3 shabbos shirts.
2-3 tiro pants to play sports in and 2-3 t-shirts
1 pair of shabbos shoes
1 pair of everyday dress shoes
1 pair of sneakers
1 pair of slides
1 bath robe
2 towels
1 sweatshirt/hoodie
2-3 tzizis (we have one for shabbos and one everyday)
2-3 yarmulkas
2 pajamas (unless they sleep in the tiro pants)
hats (one everyday, one shabbos)
tefillin
Shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, mouthwash, soap (my boys want body wash), deodorant, laundry detergent.
alarm clock
glasses case/lens case/solution (if applicable)
1-2 laundry bags (one of my boys likes one for darks and one for whites)
1 set of Linen with blanket and pillow
I don't send winter coat till later in the year
mp3/phone if allowed
Food
1 bathing suit
