I bought some extra cholent meat on sale last week, since it was as cheap as chicken, and wanted to change up our weekday menu a bit.

Any tomato free (excepting a splash of ketchup or barbecue sauce) crockpot recipes that aren't cholent? A filling soup/stew/all in one meal?

I have basic ingredients in the house, nothing crazy.

I got down the by cookbook and the closest I found had beer in it... Don't have that. Any other ideas? I don't have orange juice either. (We are a fruit free family, which is why no tomatoes).

Slow cooker beef and broccoli. So good.

I use stew meat for this recipe. And frozen broccoli. Just add the broccoli when you turn it on high.

Sounds good. You really use a half cup of soy sauce? Isn't that really salty?

Instead of Orange Juice, you can add a little wine. Or even some water.

Should the fluid cover the meat and potatoes?

I always buy the low sodium soy sauce. And there’s no other salt in the recipe, tastes fine.

No, just a little sauce on the bottom so the meat does not dry out.

Maybe 1/3 covering the meat and potatoes.

This is the simple and yummy stew I make in the instant pot:

Sautee onions and celery, add garlic and meat pieces and sautee some more. Add cut potatoes and carrots, water, salt, pepper, and lots of garlic powder. It comes out yum!

I'm not sure how to translate this to the crock pot though.

How long does it need, high/low?

Cook on high for about 2 1/2 - 3 hours.

Taste a bite of meat to see if it is soft enough for you.

If you want to put it up before you leave to work, you can put it
on low for 6 hours.
