Devorah, how did your meat stew come out?

Not that great... It cooked fine and I think it came out right, but not my taste. Kids were not fans. I think potatoes and meat flavor are just not something we can appreciate. I will try other things.

Thanks for the update.

Maybe your kids would prefer a meat and rice combo.

Or meat and beans - but that would be chulent.

I know I'm late but there's a recipe in Dinner Done that is stew meat + Israeli couscous. It looked good. Don't have the cookbook on hand ATM

You could try the recipe I gave you WITHOUT the potatoes:

Sauted Onion, 1 T. onion soup mix, a squirt of Ketchup or BBQ sauce, sliced bell peppers,
mushrooms (optional), 1 T. Brown sugar, 1 cup OJ, or Water, or Wine & Water.

You can pour the sauce over cooked rice, couscous, noodles, quinoa, etc.

You may like classic flavors with onion, garlic, salt, bay leaves, flour to thicken, parlsey and/or paprika optional, and only 1-2 cups liquid.

Beef and Israeli Couscous

Beef ingredients:
2 lb beef stew
2 Tbsp oil
1 onion, diced
1 tsp kosher salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp sugar

Couscous ingredients:
4 oz (1/2 bag) Israeli couscous
3 cups water
3 tbsp mushroom soup mix
1/2 tsp kosher salt
dash black pepper
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder

Directions: Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onion; saute until soft, 5-7 minutes. Add beef; season with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and sugar. Lower heat, cover, and cook for 2 hours. (Check periodically. If you feel it's drying out, you can add a bit of water, but it may not be necessary as the meat releases liquid.
Add couscous, water, soup mix, salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Cover; cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

*If you include the whole bag of couscous, the recipe instructs to just add 1 more cup of water.
