I see that multiple people commented in a different post that their 5/6 month old drank from a “regular” cup. They held it themself? What size/kind of cup did you give? Currently my 7 month old has only drunk from a regular cup but we always hold it for him. I’d like suggestions on what the best cup would be and also what age they can successfully be holding and feeding themselves from it.

I start with a shot glass at 6 momths, good size and weight. I do help them hold it at first during the learning process, but a normal baby is eager to take over, just like they are eager to grab the spoon or take finger food by themselves. You can train them to give up temporarily and let you do all the work, or you can let them have at it and accept that there will messes and spills. I believe in the principle of letting a child do for himself whatever he is able and willing to.

Yes he has tried taking the regular size cup from my hands to do himself but it’s just too big for him to hold by himself.

I’m worried about a shot glass being dropped off the side of his high chair and shattering. Should I not worry about that?

I'd get a low table and chairs and have them sit there if using a shot glass

If that's a concern, I would probably go for a non breakable cup. When my own babies were learning I hovered at first and took the glass from them when they were done with their drink.

I did not do baby led weaning but I did introduce a cup from the beginning as I didn't see a need to introduce something that I would later have to wean ds off of. I held the cup for him for a while but using a cup did teach him how to use the cup properly from the beginning.
Just another perspective if you are not ready to give your baby a cup to hold independently yet. It's not either a sippy cup or else its baby holding cup on its own. There is variations in between that.
