Looking for day trip ideas up to an hour from Lakewood. Ages 2-12. Something that will take a few hours to do, and unique is a plus.

Most of these ideas are over an hour but doable for day trips.
Under an hour there are lots of parks and hikes

Cape may zoo

Fort Mott / Delaware is a great full day trip - one of my favorite

Trenton planetarium

Duke farms bike share
Philadelphia science museum
Philadelphia zoo
Governors island
Statue of Liberty
Jenkins arcades
Walk across mantoloking bridge to beach from marina

There is a ferry that takes you to fort Delaware. Ppl are dressed up like old times. Tell you about life on island back then.
Back on fort mott we picnic, bbq, play. There is a small playground and bathrooms. There are old army buildings to explore. There is a small beach with sand.

Call them to see if the ferry stops at fort mott I don’t see the schedule online

Governors island can also be a great full day trip from nj.

Take the Staten Island ferry. It’s a short walk to the governors island ferry. Bring lunch, snacks, water. There are great playgrounds. Including a junk field. Areas of hammocks. Big hills to climb. Slides down Kid art activities. Bikes and surreys to rent. Beautiful views.
