I’m learning Melachim Bet for the first time as part of the 2-year nach yomi cycle. I noticed that a lot of the kings are identified as Melech so-and-so, and his mother was X.

Does anyone have any idea why? It feels unusual to me… I feel like lineage is usually listed by father to son and I was curious.

It also sometimes indicates something about the King's character. For example, the Pasuk tells us twice that Rechavam was the son of Naama....and the reason is given that he took after her by doing Aveiros, instead of taking after Shlomo Hamelech.

(this is in Melachim Aleph)

Often kings had many wives, so when identifying which one of his sons became king it tells us which wife he was from

Sometimes it is an identifier, as the previous poster said. Sometimes it is to praise the mother, and sometimes it is to (what’s the opposite of praise?)
