My husband grew up there and my MIL still lives there. I am trying to convince her to move. Its very small and very left wing. I dont think there are more then 30 shomer shabbos families. If I am wrong someone can correct me.
The school choices are minimal. A pluralistic school and a Chabad run school. Nothing for high school. For whatever reason it never took off like Houston and Dallas did.

The city itself is one of the most liberal in the country. Also, it is a very expensive town so that probably has something to do with it too

When we were there a number of years ago, DH went for shacharis (on a weekday) and came back saying that they didn't even get a minyan (at the only shul in town). I know that the city itself has grown tremendously since then, but I haven't heard of the frum community taking off. Dallas and Houston or even San Antonio are all much better options for raising a family.

So - for a long time Austin didn't take off as a community or really as a hugely desirable place to live if you weren't involved with the university or the state government. Then the tech industry took off.
Austin grew very quickly, so quickly that the frum community had a very narrow window to grow before it got built up and priced out. Now it's more expensive than Dallas or Houston.
The community is small but friendly. A friend of mine is the temporary summer rabbi. But the prospects for growth right now aren't good. The community is in a fairly expensive part of northwest Austin.
