Quote: | Yes, because that's an important part of life and it's what people write about in books. Frum people have yet to produce great novels.
Also, I love short stories but it speaks very poorly of the education system if it's true that so few students are reading the books. |
We're obviously living in different worlds. It's not an important part of my 13 yo son's world at all to read such a thing
I don't think anything has changed in education. I went to a co-ed school 25 years ago and I can remember one boy in my grade reading the assigned novels throughout all our year's of high school. Cliffs notes and spark notes were created for a reason

In public school, it's usually used as a 5th grade level book.

Great choices! I love THE WESTING GAME. Read it as an adult when a coworker recommended it.
CITY OF EMBER is also fun. I work for the publisher. Not that I'm biased!

Someone mentioned Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry. I thought that was really good, read it for school in sixth but like I said I tended be assigned books a grade earlier.

Could be it was in our 6th grade list and I mixed it up. Our school hasn't used it in years. I was just guessing when inventorying.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the exact grade a book is assigned. I went to a highly selective, academically intense, non-Jewish private high school and we read Charlotte's Web freshman year, along with other writings, for a unit on E.B. White. I had read Charlotte's Web in third grade also, but the experience was very different in high school. The same work can be read and understood at different levels.
