Do you give Tzadakah according to how much the hair weighs?
I was told that I need to 'pay to release it' (yiddish: oisleizen)
If yes, do you weigh it and give money according to gold or silver worth?

My son had loooong beautiful hair, it weighs 45.9 oz.
I was told I need to pay $4360!
My other son's hair weighs 29 oz., I need to pay $2450!
Makes sense?
Is it a minhug? Chumrah?

Where does this minhag come from? In which communities is this acceptable? I never heard of this.

I am chassidish and never heard of this.... neither have my parents or siblings.
We save the hair and take it to meron & burn it there.

Never heard of this. Sounds CRAZY!!!

My sons' hair is in envelopes in my jewelry box.

They had beautiful blond hair, but it got darker over the years.

I will probably throw it out one day.

It's a lovely minhag, and tzedakah never goes to waste.

But if I felt it was an obligation, I'd probably be pretty upset about it.

Waiting until 3 is already a minhag based on dubious sources (that a boy is like a tree? What does this even mean?). But it isn't inherently wrong, you do you. Weighing the hair and paying thousands of dollars sounds ridiculous.

The only time I ever heard that someone weighed and gave the weight of the hair to Tzeduka was when someone's son was very sick as a baby.

His hair started to grow in shortly before he turned 3, they gave the money to thank Hashem that there son was alive.

I am chassidish. I heard that it's a minhag in some Sephardic communities, and also that some chassidish families all originally from the same small group or from one family (I don't remember) does this, too. I didn't really look into it, so my info may be off...
It happens to be, when my son turned 3 I thought it sounded like a very nice idea so I did it. But not to the extreme extent that you were told to. The way I calculated it was, for example 45.9 oz = $46.

You weigh the hair and give an equivalent amount in the zechus of the person whose kever the chalaka was at. DH took our boys to kever Shmuel Hanavi since it’s very convenient.
How did you get those numbers?

If parents needed to pay that amount of money in exchange for the hair, they wouldn't cut their boys hair. Never have I heard about those amounts of money that needed to be given. You can give if you want but there's a difference if you want or need to.
