Speaking from experience, please dont use an architect who does not have the experience with a real home. I have seen custom houses designed by frum, fresh out of college designer. While they know what a jewish house may need and may have included all that the client asked for - they have no actual experience either living in their own home, or dealt with designing homes.
It would be more worth your while spending a little more on a designer / architect with real world experience and saving yourself costly change orders and/or a home that you dont like when you move in and live there.
