If you buy primed canvases, do you gesso your canvas before beginning to paint?

No, they're already primed.

But it's much, much cheaper to stretch your own canvases!

You don't have to but if you want a smoother surface, you should use gesso.
Making your own canvases is also very expensive especially if you need to use heavy duty stretcher bars and cross braces.

Thank you.
Do people really stretch their own canvases?
It would never occur to me...

I'm working on a 36 x48 one now.
I have another commission coming up that's 40 x40.
I don't remember how much I spent , but I think it was about $120 for the canvas.

But I don't know how to stretch the canvas.

Eta. Just looked it up. It was jut under $100 for the 36 x48.

There are many videos online how to do it. It may not be worth your time, though. There are varying thicknesses of the bars. I don't know if your customer cares about that sort of thing.

Thanks.
I always use 1.5 inch wide.
The thinner one looks amd feels really cheap.
Curious...what type of things do you paint?

I don't paint - no talent at all! but I've stretched many canvases for my daughter. She paints primarily with oils but has used acrylics and gouache.

She gets her supplies from Blick. You can see from here
https://www.dickblick.com/prod.....bars/
https://www.dickblick.com/prod.....races

the cost of the 1.5 inch stretcher bars and cross braces (which we use for 48" or longer bars - they are the biggest expense, especially when you need to purchase those that are notched.)
This doesn't even include the cost of the canvas and gesso.

So premaid is expensive but it can be quite expensive to make one's own.

I do, I learned in college. It's really easy, just buy the stretchers, canvas, and gesso. Use a staple-gun to put the canvas on and leave it a little loose; the gesso (two coats) will tighten it right up.
