Has anyone been able to successfully cure hypothyroidism and go off Synthroid by eating a specialized diet? I developed hypothyroidism while pregnant with my first. Then I developed postpartum thyroiditis, first hyperthyroid followed by crazy hypothyroidism. I don't have my test results anymore but my thyroids were barely functioning. I am now 10 months pp, and after adjusting my Synthroid dose several times BH my results are now finally normal. I feel great, my metabolism is working again, and my anxiety is gone.

Normally, postpartum thyroiditis is gone within a year or two but my doctor said I may never cure from the hypothyroidism stage since I also have antibodies that can cause Hashimoto's. It's not the end of the world, but I'd hate to swallow a pill every day for the rest of my life.

I don't currently follow a specific diet, I'm an intuitive eater. I'm hesitant to go off carbs, processed food, and whatnot because I'm young and I enjoy good food Wink , but if I knew it can help cure my body I'd give it a shot.

Hi OP, mazal tov on your little one!

Antibodies for hashimotos mean your immune system has been attacking your thyroid for a long time, possibly your entire life. For some this has no impact at all, for others it means a slow decline in thyroid function. Others can turn into hyperthyroidism (overactive) or graves disease or other thyroid conditions such as cancer... This is something that I know because I've been dealing with hypothyroidism from hashimotos, since adolescence. And many in my family (parents and siblings) have some form of thyroid disfunction, some requiring treatment, some just yearly monitoring.

I have gone 6+ months low inflammatory diet, low carb/keto for years, lost weight, tried everything - for other conditions. Had no impact whatsoever on my thyroid but improved other inflammatory health conditions.

BH synthroid - the synthetic hormone my thyroid doesn't like to produce much of - has helped me stop putting on weight, and helped improve my quality of life and even BH be able to ovulate and maintain a pregnancy. Taking it every day is annoying, but I take it with my coffee and ask Hashem to heal me - and thank Him that we have such medications so that I can live a normal life. If pills are difficult, talk to your doctor. There is a liquid form, and during a time in my life when I literally was on liquids only for months, this form of synthroid was a must and a game changer.

It's normal for dosage needs to change during pregnancy, and for it to take time for your body to recover from pregnancy. Just because you may currently need it doesn't mean that you always will. If your thyroid is up to producing more, it will! And then your doctor can reduce/eliminate the synthroid medication.

I recognize this post may not be helpful to you, but it's my experience. Not trying to invalidate yours and I hope if you find a diet that works that you put it on Imamother in all caps for everyone else to try it out too!

Thanks, this was actually really helpful! I've been carrying this guilt that I'm sabotaging my health by not eating very healthy.

I've had antibodies for Hashimoto's since I was a teen, but my thyroids worked perfectly until I became pregnant. BH I don't have any other health conditions.

I agree with this!!

Except taking it with coffee. Heather please ask your doctor about that. Mine says coffee inhibits the synthroid and to make sure to take it with water on an empty stomach (I have my coffee 30 minutes after).

Basically you said it...processed foods etc are bad for your gut/autoimmunity and thyroid. Isabella Wentz has a helpful book.

Yeah, I do this. Its the most annoying part. Or sometimes I take it around 6 am when I'm up for a feeding, and then I go back to sleep and can't remember if I took it...

My endocrinologist said that pregnancy is the most common reason women end up with endocrinology issues. It causes major hormonal changes and messes up the immune system, and that nearly everything goes back to these as the cause. Thyroid issues, diabetes, many skin conditions, arthritis, the big c... Please don't blame yourself, no doctor should tell you that you damaged your thyroid by "not eating very healthy." Because that wouldn't be based in reality.

The doctors I've seen explained that everyone has genetic weaknesses, or predispositions, for certain health conditions. Pregnancy is one of those things that can flip the genetic switch and turn a predisposition into a reality... But we know that it's just Hashem sending teva to bring the next chapter in our lives.

I'm happy for you that the hyperthyroid episode has passed; I a less hypoactive time after a pregnancy and it wasn't fun - because I thought I had my thyroid stable for so many years that I could shift to a PCP for management and wasn't on top of it to ensure they were, so my artificially created hyperthyroidism was missed and I was anxious and felt awful physically and couldn't conceive... Until I looked at my labs and made an urgent appointment with an endocrinologist to get things settled. It's good to stick with an endocrinologist long term, or to at least be on top of your own labs and ask questions if things go out of range.

Much hatzlacha! Give yourself a pat on the back for getting through hyperthyroidism postpartum!

My endocrinologist said as long as I follow the same routine all the time then it's totally fine! If the absorption is inhibited they would increase the dose... I did go caffeine free for about a year and there were no changes - maybe some are more sensitive?

You can look into going gluten free. I have heard it helps with the antibodies . I have been gf, but it never helped me lower my synthroid dosage ..so who knows.

I would totally go gf if I knew it would help. I don't want to turn my life upside down for nothing...

Ok I know I'm being dramatic. I'm just waiting for someone to tell me they did it and it worked.

Over the last 3-4 years, I did a massive massive overhaul on my entire lifestyle. Bh I have been able to stabilize my thyroid and have been off meds for the last 8 months or so. I'm monitoring it with bloodwork about every 2 months. So far so good.

Maybe only if you don't add milk? My endo said no way or would need higher dose and inconsistent results.

I take my synthroid with coffee. As long as my blood numbers are good, I don't see a problem. It could be I would be on a lower dose otherwise

Keto with no gluten, dairy or nuts. But I don’t have hashi. And I couldn’t keep it up. I’m still off gluten, dairy and nuts but not on keto and need low dose synthroid.

There are two different things going on here. Thyroid issues, fircwhich I think you should consult a specialist dietician who understands thyroid issues and then, health in general.

I think you know already that a lot of us with inflammation problems do well on low carb. I hear that you don’t want to do that.

I do however think that processed food isn’t doing you any favours. You want to eat junk sometimes? Go ahead. Make your baseline real food most of the time and enjoy what you want at other times.

I really think that most nutrition science supports that heavily processed foods aren’t good for our overall health, even when we don’t have weight to lose.

It’s also easier for some then low carb.

If I could handle the carbs I’d eat corn and potatoes and other higher carb stuff that I cooked myself. Sadly these are the foods that make me crazy, so I have other reasons for myself not to eat them.

My doctor recently started treating my
Low thyroid that was low for 15 years since I first heard about it. Weirdly because I feel so good most of the time, the reason I knew about the thyroid was hair loss and feeling cold. I’m on dessicated thyroid for that and my levels bounce a bit but always within the normal range now.

I happen to eat low carb, and for me I’m sure that it does not have any particular effect on my levels because untreated they’re the same as they were before I changed my food. That said, I feel way better and did before the thyroid got treated as well, probably because my way of eating.

My doctor prescribed it for me. I’m actually pretty ignorant about it but from what I understand, instead of just raising one thing, it raises three.

I can’t answer why he thought it was better for me than synthroid. Usually I’m pretty health literate but truth be told as long as my levels show up properly, I don’t care so much. Not sure why. I care about all the other health things lol.
