Can anyone recommend communities outside of Jerusalem to spend Rosh Hashana through Yom Kippur? Looking for a rental with warm shuls nearby and places to pick up Y.T. food.

Ramat Beit Shemesh. Only a bus ride from Jerusalem. Trains, and transportation to other cities for touring. Plenty of Ready made food for Yom tov in Many areas. Now RBS has many places to rent, RBSA, Gimmel 1 and 2 , Rama Daled. Stores nearby. All types of Shuls.

Good question, Dr. Mom. We are not big on chazzanut, but appreciate a pleasant ba'al tefillah. It's fine if the d'var Torah is in Hebrew or English. We can fit into a yeshivish crowd or a Dati Leumi...
Can one just walk into a Shul on these holidays or does it need advance prep - tickets?

Its very individual. Some shuls you need to pay and others you can just walk into.

There are so many communities in Israel that are dati leumi, not really yeshivish, thats an american label. If you want that, rbs aleph would be your best bet really.
