Decorators: Modern, traditional, modern, traditional, its a cycle. Its been 10-20 years of one then 10-20 years of another.
I think this is a pretty accurate timeline of each decade's "hot looks" in kitchens.
In the 1930s and 1940s they used painted metal kitchen cabinets (yich).
In the 1950s and 1960s everyone in the know was putting in honey stained wood kitchen cabinets, many with avocado green or harvest gold appliances (yich).
In the 1970s and 1980s everyone in the know was putting in very very expensive mica kitchens (I think mostly with fiberboard under the mica cabinets) with a vertical or horizontal stripe on every cabinet door.
In about the year 2000, they went back to traditional style with painted white wood raised panel cabinets.
Now for the last 10 or so years its been back to modern looking cabinets, either wood with formica/modern looking coating, or a modern mica looking material thats stronger than mica.
What do you predict is the next kitchen look?

I do not see a pattern. These are all different styles. Even if something comes back (ex mid century modern style is in now) it comes back with a more modern look.

Not to quibble but the most recent trend - or the ubiquitous kitchen style - for the past few years are white or gray Shaker doors. It isn't particularly modern but it read contemporary. To a great extent it is based on the kitchens of movies directed by Nancy Meyers which had beautiful white airy kitchens.
Current trend is going back to wood stained kitchens but white painted Shaker doors (or gray) are still popular.
Formica slab doors are not a particular trend now or in the recent past.

Do a kitchen that makes you happy regardless of the style. Either way you won’t be totally up to date unless you’re constantly redoing it.

Problem is you dont know if youre happy until you see the wear and tear after use.

That has nothing to do with style but has to do with the quality of the cabinets and other elements of the kitchen.
That said there are certain elements that are more delicate than others but in general the style of a door has nothing to do with quality. In general painted doors will show wear more than stained wood because paint can chip and also because wood expands and contracts and so paint will show small cracks as part of normal aging process.
Drawers can be made to last or made cheaply.
If you want a kitchen that lasts invest in high quality cabinets and get some basic understanding of what is involved so that you can make intelligent choices and not rely on a salesperson.

I have always liked modern, sleek, minimalist-finish kitchens, no matter what is "in style."

google "coastal kitchens" or "coastal grandmother". The coastal grandmother stuff is more than just kitchens.
The kitchen from SOmething's Gotta Give really launched the trend just as Martha Stewart's gray kitchen 15 years ago had a lot to do with inspiring gray kitchens. Unfortunately not all the gray kitchens are executed as beautifully as Martha's as they sunk into the mass big box stores.
Here is a Town and Country article with pictures of Nancy's best kitchens
