My baby son (11 months) has had breathing problems since birth. He was put in the NICU on oxygen because he was grunting and retracting. The first few months of his life he had constant ear infections and got tubes at 6 months old. (That’s the earliest the doctors would do it. We had to wait.) He got covid pesach time and since then he is constantly sick and congested. A month ago, he was rushed to the hospital by Hatzolah in respiratory distress. He’s on constant steroids and nebulizer treatments around the clock. This week, he developed pneumonia. BH he seems to be improving with antibiotics but the doctors don’t know what’s causing all this. So our next step is a pulmonologist and allergist but they said they may not have any answers for us either. Anyone deal with something like this?

ETA we already know he’s allergic to dairy and soy

Absolutely make the appointments and go. I'm a little taken aback that you weren't referred sooner.

A pulmonologist helped us, though not directly.

DD did not have anywhere near as extensive issues, but every time she got a cold she would get severely congested, nebulizer wouldn't help enough with her breathing, and back to the ER we would have to go.

Pulmonologist thought it was that her cough was not strong enough to clear her lungs from the phlegm and wanted to give her allergy meds to thin the secretions. Insurance didn't end up approving the meds so we never got them, but it did give us an idea.

We started doing nasal rinses on her (aka neti pot) and it really helped clear out the phlegm before it settled in her lungs. She hated it, but no phlegm in her lungs meant they didn't get inflamed and I don't think she had a single ER trip after that point.

Definitely go see pulmonologist and you may also benefit from having a swallow study to see if there’s aspiration contributing or causing the pneumonias.

Definitely go to a pulmonologist and allergist. I have a friend who it has made.a big difference for. Something that has also helped some kids who keep getting pneumonia is using.chest vest to prevent things from settling into the lungs.

Dc was also having breathing issues from day he was born. We went to ENT due to his congestion. After a few months and a couple of meds without any improvement, he sent us to a pulmonologist. For some reason, in between our pulmonologist appt, an ER Dr sent us to an allergist. Bh he was the right sh'liach to send us to the right pulmonologist who diagnosed my baby with traceomalacia. Which he Bh grew out at the age of 4.

Allergies can wear a persons defences down over time making it difficult to fight when exposed to various infections.

I think allergies when I hear stories like this, mainly because the times in my life I had the worst problems with my lungs were when my allergies were worst. Once I remove the allergen in my case ( smoking, cat, dust mites, certain foods) I do much better.

I realize he’s a baby and has his own unique circumstances but I think referrals to allergist and pulmonologist sound very logical as next steps.

I no longer need my asthma meds at all unless I am exposed to a direct allergen ( like mold, or occasional environmental stuff.) for me, the three things listed all had the most severe effects on me. If you’d told me when I was twenty that these allergies would affect me by making me sick with respiratory infections, I’d have thought you were crazy. Sure smoking was going to give me cancer and the cat gave me asthma but it turned out my lungs and immune system were so overworked I could not fight viral or bacterial infections.

Food was another interesting one. I used to have exercise asthma in addition to allergic asthma and now unless I come cross the wrong substance ( rarely enough that I don’t even know where my inhaler is most of the time,) you’d never even know I had asthma and I haven’t been sick at all with any respiratory infection in the past five plus years. ( last one was January 2017.)

I think it sounds like you are in good hands. Refuah shlemah!

Wishing you strength as I know it's hard. My dd was constantly congested and wheezing from the 3 months old. She was hospitalized 4 times with lung related issues, that including a respirator in critical condition due to measles. It was a nightmare all that time. Now she's bh turning 4 and she's outgrew it. Her pulmonologist could only tell us about steroids
