Going by looks, I'd say that's the medium size, and wouldn't hold a looseleaf.

some of my DD's didn't keep their looseleaf in their backpack - they liked to just hold it separately - but one would've left it on the bus if it wasn't in her pack. I would go with a larger size for such a kid.

Def won't hold a looseleaf. Couldn't comfortably fit in a nicer one subject spiral.
