My 11 year-old son has low muscle tone and motor planning issues and has never been athletic. He's always been a healthy weight but lately he's noticing that his muscles are scrawny and "squishy" as he called it. I asked his pediatrician and he just basically said "any exercise will help". Looking for more ideas that can help him. He has never successfully rode a bike.

I would have a few sessions with a physiotherapist or occupational therapist, they could guide you on what areas to work on and give you exercises and ideas

Sign him up for lessons in something active, anything will improve it.

Swimming, karate, buy a trampoline, skating, anything that will keep him moving will build him up.

Swimming, running, biking etc...if he never rode a bike it may also be due to poor motor planning and he would prob benefit from some pt.

My son refused PT, OT. For the last 2 years he has a personal trainer at a gym and he loves it.

These articles explains it pretty clearly. Note that kids can have mito dysfunction even if they don’t have an asd diagnosis.
