For those New Yorkers who have enjoyed the summer boxes (like myself), does anyone know if the govt will approve an extension of the program? We got an email from school letting us know the school lunch programs ‘for all’ versus the income based they had before Covid was NOT renewed for this year. So wondering if there is a chance the boxes might continue.
Perhaps someone has connections to the services and schools who applied for and received the permits to supply the boxes over the summer and may have insider information?

If you need assistance with food, you can apply to the Flatbush Community Fund Food Pantry. They also assist with paying for groceries if they have the funding.

Thr boxes are for breakfast/lunch, so once School starts, boxes stop
It's up to the schools if they want to participate. There are certain guidelines (whole wheat, etc)

I live elsewhere but our boxes ended too because the summer food program ended. We got all last year too when NY didnt because we had universal lunches at public schools. Public schools here are still giving out lunches to all even without meeting financial criteria. But we dont get boxes anymore...

They have always been around for those who qualify income wise
What's stopping is allowing everyone free meals due to the "pandemic"

For those who qualified. I thought the whole point of this was that it was for everyone, no need to qualify.

Right but the pandemic is over and so is free lunch for everyone
But the federal school lunch program that preceded the pandemic is continuing

Got it. That’s the program I thought was ending- the one for those who qualify.

Right! The public school announced they will be serving breakfast and lunch for free this year for their students, not with subsidized pricing based on income like they used to offer. But the yeshivas say the free lunch program is not continuing. So that’s why I’m wondering/asking if there is any way boxes for Kosher students can be continued.

It's dependent on percentage of low income in the area/school. Over a certain percentage can qualify the whole school for free.

So why does the public school get but not the yeshiva in the same district? And even more puzzling, the yeshiva in the next zip code over is certainly lower income than the public school (Inwood/Lawrence versus Far Rockaway)!

I don't know the percentage of free and reduced lunches in each public school. It's the percentage of the parent body, not the overall poverty limit where each parent contributes to an average.
