But if life expenses were lower, and the players would have better tools at their disposal, the financial situation may not have been as dire.

We are landlords and if our tenants would pay late rent we wouldn't be able to afford the house they're renting in the first place. Tenants rent usually covers landlord's mortgages. To assume that landlords are rich is the same as assuming anyone in any business is rich.
